Kids' Lunches - Day 5

I went hiking with my sister today in Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park.
It was lots of fun, but it was a really busy day. When we got back to my house, it was nearly dinner time, and I hadn't given lunches any thought. I threw this together in about 90 minutes, spaced throughout the evening. I need to get some lunch items stashed in the freezer so that I can mix and match items on busy days. Maybe I'll have some time to do that next week. This week, I'm full of visitors, so I have little spare time. Anyway, here are the girls' lunches for Thursday.

Clockwise from top right: Apple slices (rubbed on a lemon wedge to keep them fresh); homemade granola; salad: lettuce, cucumber, sweet pepper, carrot, shredded cheese; sweet potato biscuits baked in a muffin tin & a small container of French dressing. Juice to drink.

Same lunch, just without salad dressing.

  1. Looks delish...almost makes me want to send my kids to lunch program...almost! Instead they get to come home but I plan to be creative and still make them fun and nutritious lunches.

  2. Your lunches look fabulous! I've recently picked up this craze and have purchased a few different lunch box/bento boxes. Do you have a favorite? I've found some are better than others for certain food types and eaters. Check out my blog post on my most recent adventure:

  3. Hi Kim, I think it's great that your kids get to come home for lunch. I'd love that opportunity!

Liz, thanks! I don't have a favorite, but I'll tell you what I think of the three I'm using now: Picky Eater uses a small, traditional bento, which is fun to pack and perfect for her appetite. Bayberry uses Laptop Lunches, which is more mainstream and hip, and its larger size is perfect for HER appetite. My husband's been using Easy LunchBoxes, which are a snap to prepare, and are sized large enough for an Army man's lunch while still maintaining portion control easily. I love them all...but I will be acquiring more as the year goes by, just for fun and variety.

  4. Hi there! I love following your new blog - I feel inspired to tackle lunches now!

It would be great if you could link to your recipes for things that are cooked/baked. For instance, I'd love to see the sweet potato muffin recipe just by clicking through to it. Is that too hard though? ( I know nothing about this kind of thing!) :-)

  5. No, it's not hard at all. I do it with many of the things I make (just click on the recipe name if it's in a different color than the rest of the text) I use my own recipes whenever possible (My main blog is http://cookathome2010.blogspot.com). The sweet potato "muffins" are actually my sweet potato biscuits recipe made into little balls. I'll go link that recipe now. Thank you for asking! :)
